Top Knife Maintenance Tips

20th Jun 2022

Most knives are made from high-quality steels that can stand the test of time. However, they still require a bit of care to stay in tip-top shape! The last thing you’d want to do is spend money on a knife just to let it rust or go dull, right? Don’t waste your money! Protect your investments by following our knife maintenance tips to ensure you’re getting the most life out of your folding knives, pocket knives, and fixed blade knives.

Tip #1: Store your Knives in a Knife Case

The first thing we recommend for ideal knife maintenance is buying a good knife case. Having proper knife storage is the best proactive step you can take to keep your knives from becoming damaged. Knife cases allow you to bring your knives safely and conveniently wherever you want to go. When out and about, accidents are bound to happen. Dropping a knife without a case, however, can damage the blade or handle. Avoid breaking or damaging your knives with proper knife storage.

Cases also protect against dirt and grime which creates less time spent cleaning your knives. Check out Knifeworks, the best Online Knife Store, and explore their selection of knife cases here! Whether it’s single cases for fixed blade knives or larger cases for multiple knives, knifeworks carries it all!

Tip #2: Regularly Oil your Folding Knives

Over time the folding mechanism of these knives can get a little stiff, which requires a lot of effort to get them open. Make sure you oil your knife 2-3 times a year to ensure it opens and closes smoothly.

Fun Fact: Knife Oil can also be used on the blade and is an excellent protectant from corrosion! Check out this oil from Kershaw Knives here!

Tip #3: Sharpen your Knives Regularly

After every use, your knife begins to dull. That’s why we recommend using a pull-through sharpener, leather strop, or other sharpening tools after 2-4 uses of your knife to ensure it stays sharp. However, some knives require different sharpening tools, so make sure you buy the correct one for your knife!

Fun Fact: A dull blade requires more pressure from the user to cut, which increases the chances that you’ll slip and cut yourself! Keep those blades sharp. Check out sharpening tools here!

There you have it! Keep these tips in mind, and we promise your knives will last for years and work just how you need them to.
