There are many different types of poker, each of them played in another way. Today, we will focus on three most popular poker games: Texas Hold’em, Omaha and Seven-Card Stud.
Texas Hold’em rules
In this type of poker, at the beginning of the game players get two cards of their own (so called holecards or pocket cards), after which first round of bets begins. The player to the left from big blind, choosing from calling the big blind, raise or fold. Then, there is so called flop – when three board cards are being turned at the same time.
After that – there is another round of betting (starting from player being on the left of the dealer button) and second board cards’ turning begins. This time though, one at a time – with betting after each of them. The first card turned is being called the turn card and the second – the river.
The cards on the table (not holecards) are so called table cards and they can be used by any player. What is more, he can use any type of combination among his own cards and the cards at the table. It means, that even using all table cards (without holecards) is possible – and this move is being called „play the board”.
Omaha – poker game rules
This type of poker has quite similiar rules to Texas Hold’em. Instead of getting two cards at the beginning of the game – each player is handed four cards (so called hole cards). The biggest difference between Texas Hold’em and Omaha is that player is obliged to use accurately two hole cards and three board ones.
As written before, at the beginning of the game, each player receives four cards. Then, the first round of bets begins, followed by the flop – turning over three community cards. After that, second betting takes place.
Next step of Omaha poker is turning fourth table card, then – another round of bets. After that comes the final turning – the river. Now all the table cards are dealt and last betting in the game takes place.
At the end of the game comes so called showdown, during which every player (starting with either last raiser or first bettor) has to show their hand.
In general, all rules of Texas Hold’em apply to Omaha poker except for using all board cards.
This type of poker is slightly different from the previous ones. This time, to win the game you need to collect the best five-card poker hand (out of seven cards total). At the beginning of the game, each player gets one upcard and two downcards. Then, the first betting takes place, followed by dealing the fourth card.
Second betting round takes place when each player has four cards and after that – they are being dealt the fifth one. Bets are being placed again, then the players get another, sixth card (sixth in a row). This is almost the end of the game: players put only one more bet and get their final card (so called river). Then, it’s showdown time.
In Seven-Card Stud poker, players can use any five cards, which are at their hand. To win, they have to show the best poker set of cards possible with what they have on hand.
